Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John are being asked to consider their interest in hosting the 2029 Canada Summer Games.

Representatives of those cities have been invited to an information meeting later this month with the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture and the national governing body of the Canada Games, the Canada Games Council.

The Canada Games are a national, multi-sport competition with participation from every province and territory. They are held every two years, alternating between winter and summer.

“It is exciting to begin discussions regarding the process of selecting a host community for the 2029 Games,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “This meeting will give the cities an understanding of the role a host community would play, as well as the selection process.”

The Games are expected to attract between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors to the province, involving more than 4,000 participants and about 6,000 volunteers. The government estimates the event will add between $51.2 million and $57.5 million to the provincial GDP and generate about $6 million in provincial taxes.

“Hosting the Games is a significant commitment with several factors to consider,” said Scott-Wallace. “We will want to ensure the host city has what is needed, including access to a large group of volunteers, venues that meet national standards, and adequate accommodations for participants and spectators.”

The formal bid process begins this fall, with the host community expected to be announced in the spring of 2025.

New Brunswick has hosted the Games twice before: the Summer Games in Saint John in 1985 and the 2003 Winter Games in Bathurst-Campbellton.

The next Canada Games will be the 2025 Summer Games in St. John’s, N.L. Team New Brunswick collected 16 medals at the most recent Canada Games this past winter in Prince Edward Island.

Scott-Wallace said she looks forward to inviting the rest of Canada to join the excitement once the host community for 2029 is chosen.
