Today was the most special day in Sussex as students of several grades covered the grounds of Sussex Middle School with a sea of cardboard squares to create a massive, temporary mural featuring the childhood image of Phyllis Webstad of BC. She is a residential school survivor, and founder of Orange Shirt Day and the Every Child Matters movement. The opportunity for our children to learn about truth and reconciliation was powerful, even more so with Phyllis Webstad here in Sussex for the project. I was so happy to support the project with funds through the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture. The project is the brainchild of retired SRHS art teacher Bonny Hill who we all know for her local contribution to the arts and advocacy work. Wonderful job everyone.

History was made today in Sussex with a visit by Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, colonel-in-chief of the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise’s). I was approached nearly two years ago by the regiment with a dream of having the princess here for the Hussars’ 175th anniversary. I was so happy the province could deliver on financial support for the celebration. I applaud the many people who made this special event happen, with specific

congratulations to Sussex Mayor Marc Thorne for playing host to a beautiful ceremony today, volunteers and summer staff of the 8th Hussars Museum, and the clergy, congregation and choir of Trinity Anglican Church for the wonderful service this morning. Happy anniversary 8th Canadian Hussars, and thank you to the men and women of the regiment for your service.

I'm wishing a very happy 85th birthday to Douglas Cosman.

Doug has worn many hats over the years, including serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a chaplain, operating a local business, and as a predecessor of mine as MLA when the riding was called Kings East.

Happy birthday, Doug. Thank you for all of the many ways you have served our community over the years. I hope you enjoy your special day.
